The 79th Cannes Film Festival has unveiled its official selection, and it includes several Mediterranean productions. The festival will take place from May 12th to 23rd.
In the Un Certain Regard section, Moroccan director Laila Marrakchi will present her third feature La mas dulce (Strawberries). The film follows two young Moroccan women working in southern Spain who decide to denounce the abuse and exploitation.
Also in the same section is the debut feature from Palestinian director Rakan Mayas, Yesterday the Eye Didn’t Sleep. Set in Lebanon’s Bekaa Valley, the film is set in a Bedouin village with a close-knit community shaped by tradition and unspoken rules. The entire village is searching for Gamra, a young woman accused of setting fire to the car of the man she loved after he chose to marry someone else.
In the Competition, two highly anticipated Spanish films are in the running: Pedro Almodóvar’s Autofiction and Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s The Beloved.
The whole selection can be found on the Festival de Cannes web-site.
