FRANCE / The 39th Douarnenez Film Festival turns towards Turkey

With last year’s festival focused on Andean cinema, this year the Douarnenez Film Festival (Brittany) will turn its lens on the people of Turkey.

From August 19th to 27th 150 films will be shown to explore “Turkey’s history and the present reality” and also “to highlight the shared influences, dialogue and ways of life.”

Through screenings, radio plays, debates, concerts, exhibitions and a literary day the festival hopes to highlight all the peoples of Turkey, including its minorities – Kurdish, Alevi, Armenian and gypsy. It will also be an outlet for activists for freedom of expression, feminism and the LGBT population.

There will also be a parallel fringe section, La Grande Tribu, showing slightly off-beat films from around the world, particularly films about refugees. The highlight will be Gianfranco Rosi’s documentary “Fuocoammare”.

Finally, the Grand Cru Bretagne section presents a selection of films made in Brittany over the past year.
