On March 7th Delphine Ernotte, chair of France Télévisions, inaugurated a 16,000 square metre studio complex at Vendargues near Montpellier in southern France. Initially it will be used to shoot a new daily half-hour soap, scheduled to air as from September on France 2.
The series’ storyline is a woman coming back to Montpellier after a long absence, with producer Toma de Matteis wanting to “capture the local atmosphere as much as possible.” The title and the main cast are being kept secret. Filming will also take place in Nîmes, Montpellier and La Grande-Motte. Starting production in April, the series will employ around 150 people, rising to 400 at the peak of the activity.
According to Delphine Ernotte, the new studio is France Télévisions’ first step in making the Montpellier region a “French Hollywood for TV series”. The studio will be used to produce other series in the near future.
