Egypt was the guest of honour at A Better World for Humanity, a ceremony held on May 18th as part of the Cannes Film Festival, organised by the Better World Fund.
The Egyptian Ambassador, Tarek Dahroug, emphasised that Egypt’s significant presence at the Cannes Film Festival is a sign of its international cultural influence. The ceremony was also an opportunity to mark the centenary of the birth of Egyptian director Youssef Chahine.
A leading figure in Egyptian cinema, Youssef Chahine began his career in musicals with films such as Papa Amine (1950) and The Lady of the Train (1953). He later directed historical films as well as politically engaged films, highlighting the ills of Egyptian society.
The mission of the Better World Fund is to unite its partners around the challenges of the contemporary world. “Together, we can redouble our efforts to raise public awareness and have a lasting impact on the most pressing challenges facing our global community. By joining forces and resources, we aim to foster a collective commitment to building a better world for tomorrow,” their statement reads.
The programme includes meetings on gender equality, education and AI.
