On November 17th in Strasbourg, Zaina Erhaim, a 30-year old Syrian journalist, won the 2015 Reporters Without Borders Award. She was chosen for “her ethics, determination and courage” and for her ability to “emphasize the human dimension behind the scenes of war”.
Still based in Aleppo, for the past two years she has trained about a hundred people, (one third of whom are women) in television and print media journalism. She is also coordinator of the Institute for War and Peace Reporting, a non-profit organization promoting positive change in war zones, landlocked regions and countries in transition.
In her latest documentary, “Syrian Women Rebels”, she follows women who have chosen to remain in Syria and provide support to the rebellion.
Erhaim Zaina’s uncle received the award on her behalf at a ceremony organized as part of the World Forum for Democracy.
The Media Award of the Year went to the Turkish opposition newspaper Cumhuriyet.
