The chair of the Société Nationale de Radiodiffusion et de la Télévision (SNRT), Fayçal Laâraïchi, announced to the Moroccan Parliament that by 2024, public Moroccan television would no longer be showing sitcoms.
The CEO of SNRT added that the measure would “offer Moroccans new ways of viewing broadcast content, in order to meet their expectations.” Sitcoms would be replaced by soap operas produced in Morocco.
According to the website le360.ma “Moroccan viewers are less and less interested in sitcoms and prefer television dramas.”
The decision also follows the complaint by the Moroccan Association of Young Lawyers during Ramadan against one of the best-known comedy series “Kahwa Ness Ness”, accusing it of damaging their profession’s image. A complaint was filed with the Haute Autorité de la Communication Audiovisuelle (HACA) to stop the programme.
