Celebrating its 10th anniversary, the Cyprus International Short Film Festival ran from October 10th to 16th. Organized by the cultural services of the Ministry of Education and the Rialto Theatre, this year’s Festival offered a parallel programme of screenings and events in addition to the national competition.
The screenings :
- Black Lives Matter: Inspired by recent events in the United States, the programme features two award-winning films. Although they were made 50 years apart they share the same subject: the rights of African Americans, their fight for equality and dignity. The two films are Black Panthers by Agnès Varda (30 min, 1968) and Skin by Guy Nattiv (20 min, 2018).
- 50 vs Covid-19: fifty short films made by Cypriot film-makers during lockdown. All these three-minute films were funded by the Department of Cultural Services of the Ministry of Education.
- 50 years of Tampere: The Tampere Film Festival (Tampere FF) is one of the most important short film festivals in the world, this year celebrating its 50th anniversary. To mark the event, the Cyprus International Short Film Festival paid tribute to their Finnish counterpart by screening films which have won awards there.
- Young heroes on the big screen: a selection of short films produced in 2019 or 2020 about children and young people facing the world of adults.
The events :
- Words about film: this event explored the link between literature and the moving image, with a talk by Greek writer and director Petros Tatsopoulos and a series of readings by Cypriot writers inspired by the short films.
- Astonish me: a competition of music videos assessed by a jury of students from the multimedia and graphic arts department of the Cyprus University of Technology.
