Igor Bezinović’s docu-fiction Fiume o Morte! has won several awards at the 54th Rotterdam International Film Festival.
In addition to the festival’s Grand Prix, the film won the Critics’ Award and the Audience Award. At the closing ceremony producers Vanja Jambrović and Tibor Keser said: “
We are deeply touched by this recognition, especially since it’s the result of almost a decade of hard work. There’s usually an army of people behind the scenes of a film, and that’s especially true in this case!
”
This Croatian, Italian and Slovenian co-production looks back at the 1919 occupation by three hundred Italian soldiers of Fiume, a Croatian port on the Adriatic. During the 16-month occupation, a unique and revolutionary social experiment led by the poet Gabriele D’Annunzio, a team of photographers took more than 10,000 images. A century later, film-maker Igor Bezinović invited three hundred citizens into a surreal reconstruction of the event.
