CROATIA / Box-office takings for Croatian films are rising

Fiume o morte!

In 2025 the income from Croatian cinemas reached a historic high of €22.5 million. This increase is largely due to a rise in the average ticket price from €5.80 to €6.35.

2025 was also the best year for local films since 2013, with a total of 328,526 admissions. Documentaries accounted for a significant portion of this figure, with nearly 89,000 admissions. Leading the pack, Igor Bezinovic’s Fiume o morte! became the highest-grossing Croatian documentary of all time with 38,948 admissions.

Recently awarded the European Documentary Award, Fiume o morte! is a hybrid documentary revisiting the story of Gabriele D’Annunzio, an Italian poet and nationalist who occupied the city of Fiume between 1919 and 1920. To recreate key events of the story, the director involved many of those living in the city today.
