BULGARIA / Report on the Sofia International Film Festival (SIFF)

This year, the Sofia International Film Festival (SIFF) is taking place in two parts, one in the summer, the other in the autumn.

The summer section ran from June 25th to July 19th with 111 films from 48 countries being shown to the public in 2 formats: physical screenings in Sofia at Cinema House and online screenings.

On July 6th SIFF held its awards ceremony. Among the 13 films selected, 8 are Mediterranean:

The Best International First Film Award went to Svetla Tsotsorkova’s Sister, a Bulgarian and Qatari co-production.

The Award for Best Balkan Film went to Emin Alper’s A Tale of Three Sisters, and the Best Documentary Award went to Feras Fayyad’s The Cave . God Exists, Her Name is Petrunija won the Bulgarian Guild of Film Critics’ Award.

Hristo Simeonov’s Nina was voted Best Bulgarian Short Film, while Best Bulgarian Film went to Cat in the Wall by directors Mina Mileva and Vesela Kazakova.

Several Special Mentions were also given, including to Yalda, A Night for Forgiveness (director Massoud Bakhshi – an Iranian-French co-production) for the best screenplay, and for Alexander Nanau’s documentary Collective (Romania).
