On March 19th during a screening of Khaled El Kebich’s Pour Toi… Hasna at the Algerian Cinematheque, the Minister of Culture and Arts, Zouhir Ballalou, spoke about the country’s film industry.

In his words Algerian cinema is “really taking-off”, thanks to “a solid dynamic visible in the screenings of films produced by the ministry and by the professional associations organising film festivals and workshops.

He said that since the National Convention on Cinema in January (see our article), “more than 300 films have been screened in various provinces, particularly in the south, thanks to the creation of film caravans.

He added that “legal texts are currently being drafted to create a National Film Commission,” a body which aims to “resolve the sector’s problems related to authorisations, finance and control.
