The Etablissement Public de Télévision (EPTV) announced through its Director of Production, Lyes Belaribi, that it is taking measures to ensure the image of women presented in its programmes is “consistent with the spirit of the Algerian Constitution and laws of the Republic.”
Henceforth, the public broadcaster will issue production contracts which include a clause requiring executive producers to pay special attention to the image and treatment of women in their films.
According to Belaribi, who was speaking at a workshop for International Women’s Day, the measure aims to “develop and produce films favourable for the promotion and development of women, and even eliminate the factors which discriminate or stigmatise them.”
The draft reform of the Algerian Constitution, adopted on February 6th by Parliament, includes an amendment stating that “the State promotes parity between men and women in the labour market.”
