Sixth formers from schools in the PACA region, Switzerland and across the whole Mediterranean (Algeria, Egypt, Italy, Libya, Morocco, Tunisia) took part in PriMed through educational activities initiated by the CMCA, the festival organisers, to explore the meaning of being citizens of the Mediterranean.

The Averroès Junior Award

Organised in partnership with Des Livres Comme Des Idées and the Aix-Marseille Education Authority, the Averroès Junior Award was an opportunity for more than 1,500 college students to view 3 films in the PriMed selection:
ALGER, LA MECQUE DES RÉVOLUTIONNAIRES (1962-1974) by Ben SALAMA
BENVENUTI by Laura AURIOLE and Annalisa LENDARO
JE DANSERAI MALGRÉ TOUT! by Blandine DELCROIX

Most of the 6th formers came together in Marseille on November 21st, 22nd and 23rd at the Bibliothèque de l’Alcazar to discuss the three documentaries.

The Masterclass between college students and directors

Then, at the Villa Méditerranée on November 24th, more than 300 6th formers met the directors of the 3 films they had seen for the Averroès Junior Award. The students were able to ask all their questions to Ben SALAMA, Laura AURIOLE, Annalisa LENDARO and Blandine DELCROIX.

The screening-discussion “Childhood, war, exile – and education in all of that?”

The Villa Méditerranée also hosted nearly 400 6th formers for a screening-discussion about Francesca MANNOCCHI and Alessio ROMENZI’s film IF I CLOSE MY EYES. The film shows how, in Lebanese refugee camps, adults are organizing themselves to make up for the lack of schools – a problem affecting 300,000 Syrian refugee children. After the screening, several guests answered the students’ questions about the issues raised by the film: the two directors, but also writer and Islamologist Mathieu GUIDERE; the head of Rai 3’s “Doc 3”, Fabio MANCINI; and Daniel WOLFROMM, a France Télévisions reporter.
