In a statement on January 17th the Tunisian Ministry of Cultural Affairs announced the new heads of three cultural institutions. Among them, Sonia Chamkhi as director of the Centre National du Cinéma et de l’Image.

An off-shoot of the Ministry of Culture, the CNCI was created in 2012 to bring together all the different film professions under one umbrella. The organisation’s role is also to promote cinema in Tunisia, and Tunisian cinema internationally.

The appointment of Sonia Chamkhi comes after the CNCI’s previous director, Shiraz Latiri, was dismissed by ministerial decree last November.

Sonia Chamkhi has a doctorate in film, broadcasting and television from Paris’ Panthéon-Sorbonne University. Since 2003 she has directed various drama and documentary films (La porte du Sahara in 2004, Militantes in 2012 Narcisse in 2015) and has received several awards for her work, notably during the 2015 International Women’s Festival in Florence for her documentary Militantes. Sonia Chamkhi is also a writer, with four books to her credit, which have also won awards, including the CREDIF prize in 2003 and the Zoubeida Bchir prize in 2009.
