Spanish public television has a new director. At a special meeting of TVE’s Board of Directors on March 8th, Eladio Jareño was elected to run the public service broadcaster.
Born in Barcelona, Sr. Jareño was previously head of the Catalonia branch of RTVE (the public broadcasting group which includes TVE). He’s been with the company since he ran TVE Catalonia in 2003/2004, moving on to look after TVE’s youth programmes until 2008. Before working for TVE though, between 1996 and 2003, he was Head of Communications and Chief of Staff of the Government Delegation in Catalonia.
These political roots have drawn criticism from the FSP, the Federación de Servicios Públicos, who expressed its opposition to Jareño’s appointment, calling it a “step towards the politicization and partisan orientation of the national public broadcaster.”
Eladio Jareño replaces José Ramón Diez, who submitted his resignation on February 25th for “personal reasons”.
