ROMANIA / Collective put forward for the 2021 Oscars

Alexander Nanau’s Collective has been chosen to represent Romania at the Oscars – the first time Romania has chosen a documentary to represent it in the Best International Feature Film category.

The film shows the investigation into corruption after a fire in a night-club killed 64 people. Shot during the twelve months after the fire, Nanau’s feature-length documentary follows both the authorities and journalists as they try to shed light on what happened.

The film’s US distributors, Magnolia Pictures and Participant, will also nominate Collective in the Best Documentary category to double its chances of being nominated.

It’s a great honour that the National Cinematography Centre committee has such confidence in us,”the director has said. We are truly in the golden age for documentaries, and the fact that these films are starting to gain recognition on such a large scale is very encouraging. We are convinced that with the support of our American partners on the long road ahead, Collective will reach as many people as possible. It will be an atypical competition, during a complicated year, where the entry criteria have been eased, increasing the number of eligible documentaries. The competition has only just started and we are moving forward with optimism and prudence.”

Nanau’s documentary has already been shown at the Venice Film Festival, outside the competition. It was also shown at the Toronto International Film Festival and Zurich Film Festival, where it won an award. The film was also part of the official selection for the 2020 Sundance Film Festival.
