MOROCCO / Return of the Marrakesh Fête du Cinéma

The 2nd Fête du Cinéma in Marrakech was organized from September 27th to 29th.

The Festival opened with Zabou Breitman’s Swallows of Kabul. There were screenings of Moroccan film classics, such as: De quelques événements sans signification (1974, Mostafa Derkaoui) and the rushes of La Longue Journée (1969, Mohamed Abazi and Donna Woolf), discovered in 2016 at Berkeley’s Pacific Film Archive. Tunisian and Algerian films never shown in Marrakech were screened, together with some animated films.

In addition, a tribute was paid to Moroccan actress Mouna Fettou. She stars in Gaël Morel’s 2017 French film Prendre le large. With her ability to combine both popular and art films, many consider Mouna Fettou an icon of Moroccan cinema.

Finally, some films by this year’s graduates of the Marrakesh École Supérieure des Arts Visuels were shown to the public.

The festival focuses primarily on meetings between the public and professionals, so the screenings were punctuated by other major events, including round tables on Moroccan actors and actresses, training and casting.

Finally, Mouna Fettou gave a masterclass, under the direction of Roland Carrée, a teacher-researcher in cinema and his students of the ESAV.
