On February 16th, during the Casablanca International Book and Publishing Fair, the Conseil de la communauté marocaine à l’étranger (CCME) announced the launch of Awacer TV, an on-line platform whose name means “links”. It will be available from March 1st this year.
Its main aim will be to highlight both Moroccan migration and the Morocco’s influence abroad. According to the CCME’s statement, Awacer TV “will show every aspect of this migration, how it has evolved, as well as success stories of Moroccans round the world.” The Council also wants Awacer TV to be “a link and means of interaction….a tool giving greater insight of the Other, as well as the transmitting the values of peace and community spirit.”
Two short documentaries are already being trailed on the social networks of the new web TV, with images of programmes about Morocco’s history and heritage: Le Sahara, une histoire marocaine and Le Maroc, une nation millénaire. The CCME added that the content will be mainly “interactive programmes, educational and cultural vignettes in an image and video format.” They will aim to portray contemporary Moroccan society and highlight Morocco’s historical and cultural heritage.
As a foreign showcase for Morocco, one of Awacer TV’s main aims is to keep Moroccans living abroad more involved in the life of their country. The web TV also targets young viewers, with programmes giving them a chance to “rediscover their roots”.
