Broadcast by 2M as part of the programme Des Histoires et des Hommes, the first episode of the documentary series attracted 1.6 million viewers.
Produced by 2M and Ali n’Productions, this series, consisting of four 52-minute episodes, was written by Rita El Qessar and directed by Nourredine Lakhmari. Through interviews with historians, architects, archaeologists and local organisations, it describes Casablanca’s history from the earliest beginnings to the present. Each episode deals with a period in the city’s history. The first goes from Casablanca’s prehistoric traces to the 1907 bombardment. The next three episodes concentrate on the many significant 19th and 20th century events in the city, including independence and contemporary cultural development.
Interviewed by Le 360, Reda Benjelloun, 2M’s director of news magazines and documentaries, talked about the series: “We wanted to make this documentary because Casablanca is on the world map. Thanks to the film Casablanca and the 1942 Anfa conference – and because it’s an open-air architecture museum – the city is part of the world’s imagination.”
