LIBYA / A new “media centre” project in Benghazi

The Information and Culture Authority, a government department in Tobruk, announced on November 7th that soon a “media centre” would be built in the Al Salmani district of Benghazi. Covering 2,000 m², the building will house television and radio studios, as well as offices which can be used for all types of public and private media.

The Authority, whose ambition is to build “one of the biggest media and cultural centres in North Africa,” will launch a call for tenders from architects to design the plans.

As a reminder, for the past year the public television company Al Wataniya has been temporarily based in Tunis, after its headquarters in Tripoli was taken over by the Islamist militia Fajr Libya. Since then, several violent incidents have made 2015 a difficult year for Libyan television: in January a rocket attack on the offices of the privately-owned Al Nidaa and in April five journalists from Barqa TV were killed in the north of the country near El Beida.
