In August 2019 the Metropolis Association launched an appeal to save Beirut’s last art-house cinema, an essential venue for independent films. The crowdfunding operation was successful, but nevertheless the Empire Sofil Cinema has now closed.
In a press release dated January 21st Metropolis said that “The technical, financial and operational management of the cinema were all provided by the Empire Cinema Circuit – and they decided to close. Without notice.” Hania Mroué, chair of the Metropolis Association, complained bitterly that “apparently this activity was no longer profitable enough for them.” She reaffirmed the Association’s determination to maintain cinematographic diversity in Lebanon, particularly by showing films not released on the commercial circuit.
Metropolis’ main objectives are to promote independent films, encourage young audiences to discover the cinema, and allow everyone to come to the cinema. The 800,000 film-goers who registered recently and the success of the crowdfunding operation prove the Association fulfils those objectives.
Founded in 2006, Metropolis is now looking for a new space to continue its activities. In the meantime programmes for young audiences will be maintained, as will the Association’s film library project and various regional training initiatives.
