The Jordanian director Naji Abu Nowar told the UAE newspaper The National that he is currently writing a sequel to his first film, “Theeb”.
We’ve finished the research”, he said “and I’ve started writing, hoping to get funding. The film takes place roughly 10 years after “Theeb”, and it’s my tribute to Kurosawa’s “The Seven Samurai”.
Set during the First World War, “Theeb” is about a young boy living in a Bedouin camp. His brother is recruited as a guide to a British officer. Theeb decides to follow them.
Naji Abu Nowar’s film won the Horizons Award for Best Director at the 2014 Venice Film Festival, before being nominated for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film in 2016, and receiving the BAFTA Award for Best New Writer, Director or Producer (for Naji Abu Nowar and his producer Rupert Lloyd) on February 14th.
The film is such an international success that “Theeb tours” are now offered to tourists in Jordan, tracing the route used for filming.
