On Monday April 2nd 11 short documentaries, called collectively “Syrian Stories”, were screened at Amman’s Rainbow Theatre. The anthology is the product of a series of workshops held last year in Amman, Beirut and Istanbul, organised by the British Consulate, the Scottish Documentary Institute and Bidayyat, a Syrian organisation for Syrian film-makers outside Syria. 35 Syrian film-makers participated.
Hiba Hmaidy, one of the young women directors involved, stressed the workshops in Jordan enabled her to make “Suspended Lives”, a film about her father, a high-ranking military who deserted the Syrian National Army.
Noe Mendelle, the director of the Scottish Documentary Institute, said this type of project allows Syrian film-makers to show the world the situation in their country.
