According to Cinetel data two significant increases in the Italian cinema industry marked 2023: a 61.6% increase in revenue (€95.6 million) and a 58.6% increase in the number of admissions compared to 2022.
The new figures show the Italian film industry is on an upward curve and stabilizing after the disruptions caused by the pandemic, despite a drop in revenue and admissions (16.3% and 23.2%) compared to the period 2017 – 2019.
Cinetel’s data also shows Italian productions took an increased market share at the box office. In 2023 national films, including co-productions, represented 24.3% of the takings, an exceptional increase of 100% compared to 2022, with revenues totalling €120.6 million. At the same time admissions for Italian productions increased by 93.9%, totalling 18.2 million tickets sold.
Traditionally considered the weakest season for cinema-goers, the summer proved a key factor in this recovery. Between May and August the figures surpassed those of the 2017 – 2019 period.
For Mario Liorini, president of the Associazione Nazionale Esercenti Cinema (ANEC), the reason for these increases is the quality of the films, as well as “the structured and constant support of the Italian Ministry of Culture, particularly in terms of communication and promotion.”
