Italy’s national union of film journalists, the Sindacato Nazionale Giornalisti Cinematografici Italiani (SNGCI) has just announced the winners of the Nastri d’argento for the best documentaries of 2017.

In the non-fiction category, the winner was Carmine Amoroso’s Porno e libertà. It looks back at the Italy of the 1970’s, the beginning of soft porn films and their effect on politics with the election of Ilona Staller (the Cicciolina), the first actress to become a member of Parliament.

In the docu-drama category, Francesco Patierno’s Naples ’44 won first prize. Patierno recreates the journey of writer Norman Lewis to a port in southern Italy, where it is discovered he is an agent of the British secret services.

Finally in the film and entertainment category Fariborz Kamkari’s Acqua e zucchero: Carlo di Palma, i colori della vita received the Best Documentary Award.
