Jean Rouch and Jacques Arthuys created Ateliers Varan in Paris in 1980 for aspiring directors from different countries. Since then the organisation has offered many documentary training courses in France.

The courses are based on learning through doing, the Workshops’ preferred method. Following the example of direct cinema, these workshops allow students to “participate in all stages of film production.” Thus the 7-week training is divided into three periods: the first, lasting two weeks, is about learning technique (production, editing), film analysis and preparing a subject. The second stage (3 weeks) teaches how to organize filming. The last one (2 weeks) focuses on editing and completing the films. For every stage the course work is collective, with “everyone taking care of the sound recording on the set of the other trainees.”

Costing 7,000 euros (excluding tax), the training is open to everyone interested in documentary practice. No technical knowledge is required. The application must include an autobiography (2 pages maximum), a CV and a one-page text on one of the following themes: tell us about a place; tell us about a moment of life; tell us about your neighbours.

Grants are available for two young people resident in Corsica.

All the information is available on their website and the applications should be sent by email to contact@ateliersvaran.com
