The Œil d’or (Golden Eye), is awarded to the best documentary shown in any of the different sections of the Cannes Film Festival. This year it was won by Visages, Villages by Agnès Varda and the artist JR.
On May 27th Rosalie Varda, the film’s producer and daughter of Agnès Varda, was present to receive the award, after which she read a thank-you note from both directors.
“We have done our documentary work with pleasure: meeting people, filming them, listening to them, putting them on screen, making them feel special and introducing them to the people who watch our film. In a way we acted the clown. It was with good intentions….two well-intentioned hearts, two pairs of eyes. Even if the time spent filming is ephemeral, we experienced moments of friendship and sharing which were very special. The Œil d’Or is another very special gift, right on the mark. Thank you to the members of the jury.”
The jury was chaired by actress and director Sandrine Bonnaire and included Lucy Walker (British director), Lorenzo Codelli (Italian film critic), Dror Moreh (Israeli director) and Thom Power (American programmer).
A special mention was also given to Emmanuel Gras for his documentary Makala, which had already won the Grand Prix of the Critics’ Week at the Cannes Film Festival.
