Cypriot film-maker Paschalis Papapetrou has begun post-production on his documentary The History of Water.

Going back to ancient times, his film traces the history of the Cypriots’ use of water and irrigation in their semi-arid region.

In an interview with Film New Europe, the director explains: “The documentary is based on the writings of geologist Giorgos Konstantinou, who speculates that droughts or the drying up of surface water forced the inhabitants of Kissonerga, near the city of Pafos, to dig 12.5-metre-deep wells to exploit their underground water. These wells, along with others in the village of Shillourokambos in Parekklisia, have been radio-dated and estimated to be 8200 BC. They are the oldest dated wells in the world and the oldest human exploitation of underground water.”

The film is produced by Anadysis Films Ltd with a budget of €96,000 and supported by, among others, the Film Advisory Board, the Anastasios Leventis Foundation and the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment.
