EGYPT / Candidate call for the 2017 MAHD Film Lab

The Egyptian production company Felucca Films and the Swedish Institute in Alexandria are launching the second MAHD Film Lab, a training and assistance programme for young scriptwriters and directors.

The MAHD Film Lab is open to all scriptwriters and directors, Arab or European, currently working on a project for a first or second feature-length drama.

Priority is given to film projects exploring the complexity of the current situation in the Middle East, particularly those dealing with gender equality, discrimination, climate change or cultural heritage.

8 projects will be selected and their creators will join a residential workshop in Alexandria from August 11th to 15th. All costs are covered by the Swedish Institute in Alexandria.

The participants will be supervised by two screenwriters who also work as consultants: Marietta von Hausswolff von Baumgarten from Sweden (“Call girl”, FIPRESCI prize at the 2012 Toronto Festival), and the Egyptian Ayman El Amir (“Happily ever after” 2016).

Applicants must send a PDF file by June 20th to mahdfilmlab@gmail.com including:

– A single-sentence hook, a one-page synopsis and a ten-page treatment

– A note of intent (maximum 2 pages)

– A CV (2 pages maximum)

– A link to the candidate’s previous audiovisual work (maximum 20 minutes)

– A link to a video in which the candidate pitches his project in English (about 3 minutes)

The results of the selection will be announced at the end of June.
