ARAB WORLD / The Arab Cinema Centre announces the winners of its Critics Awards

The results of the Critics Awards, organized by the Arab Cinema Centre, were announced on May 20th on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival. The winners of this 3rd edition of the awards were selected by 75 film critics from 34 countries around the world.

They watched the films in competition – Arab feature films and documentaries produced in 2018 – on the internet platform Festival Scope, which lets people see films shown at festivals.

The Moroccan film Sofia, directed by Meryem Benm’Barek, received Best Screenplay and Best Actress Award for Maha Alemi’s performance.

The Best Film Award went to Egyptian Abu Bakr Shawky for Yomeddine, while the Lebanese film-maker Nadine Labaki received the Best Director Award for Capharnaum, winner of the Jury Prize at Cannes last year.

Of Fathers and Sons, by Syrian director Talal Derki, won Best Documentary. Tunisian actor Mohamed Dhrif won Best Actor for his performance in Mohamed Ben Attia’s film Dear Son.
