At a press conference in Algiers, Sami Bencheikh, director general of ONDA, the Algerian national office for copyright and associated rights, presented the organisation’s results for 2017 and objectives for 2018.
In 2017 ONDA achieved nearly 9% growth. It has also contributed more than €3 million to festivals and other cultural events.
Bencheikh also announced several important international events in Algiers for 2018. On April 16th and 17th the Algerian capital will host the World Congress of Audiovisual Authors in the presence of the Société des Auteurs Audiovisuels. The latter will also hold its AGM and renew its executive committee. According to Bencheikh, this will be an opportunity to integrate Algerian authors at the head of the organisation. The congress will also bring Algerian film-makers together with financiers and organizers of international festivals.
The final day of the congress will feature the 4th Creativity Salon, which this year becomes international. Artists and institutions working in the field of copyright both in Africa and Europe will be present, as well as the participants of the congress.
Finally, in September the Miriam-Makeba Award, created last September, will make its first presentation. The award is for an African cultural personality. The film critic Ahmed Bedjaoui will represent Algeria.
