ALGERIA / Death of the Algerian actress Fatiha Nesrine

Actress Fatiha Nesrine, whose real name was Fatiha Benmohamed, died from cancer in Algiers on March 29th. At 74 she was an icon of Algerian cinema; the Algerian Ministry of Culture paid tribute to her contribution to the country’s artistic life.

The Algerian National Theatre and the Centre national du cinéma et de l’audiovisuel also offered their condolences, reports Le Jour d’Algérie.

Born in Oran, she began her artistic career in 1964 as a dancer for the Algerian National Ballet, then as a singer. She starred in several films and series such as “Abna Achams” (Children of the Sun) by Mohamed Ifticène, “Abna Fatima” (The Sons of Fatima) by Rachid Soufi and “Les femmes d’Algérie” by Kamal Dahmane. But it was her role in the soap opera “Kiyada” which made her so popular.

Politically committed, Fatiha Nesrine often denounced the marginalization of the arts in Algeria, singling out “the side-lining of artists” in the country during a rally in April 2019.
