The first cinema complex in Algiers, TMV Cinémas, opened its doors on August 14th. It is the country’s second multiplex after Ciné-Gold opened in Oran in 2021.
Housing three cinemas with a capacity of 68, 80 and 240 seats, TMV Cinémas is located to the west of the capital in Chéraga’s Garden City shopping centre. In a press release the group specifies that the multiplex conforms to international standards of projection, sound and in the foyer. With a ticket price of 900 dinars (around €6), the complex offers national and international films. A market study of cinema-goers revealed a specific demand for showing foreign films in their original language with subtitles.
The MediAlgeria Group which created the project wants to “take advantage of [our] communication and audiovisual skills to launch a programme of cinema films,” explains the manager Riad Aït Aoudia to Box Office Pro.
For him this cinema complex is only the first step. It will be followed by “opening a 10-screen multiplex in the coming years.” He adds: “it is important for us to do things according to the rules of the art, and we benefited from advice given by European circuits in the design of the cinema. The Algerian market has the capacity to grow tenfold within 3 to 4 years, as long as we offer our public the best films and take into account the social responsibility which cinema represents.”
