TUNISIA / Filming a Netflix period series

A series produced by the American SVoD giant Netflix, Mamlek el-Nar, will be shot exclusively in Tunisia. The planned shooting schedule is 20 weeks. Tunisian actor Moez Ghdiri announced it during a radio interview on Mosaïque FM.

The series director is the British film-maker Peter Webber, best known for The Girl with the Pearl and Hannibal Rising. Financed by the United Arab Emirates, the series takes place at the beginning of the 16th century, a period which marked the end of the Mamluk Sultanate in Egypt, after 300 years in power, following its defeat by the Ottomans. More precisely Mamlek el-Nar is about Selim I, first sultan to bear the title of caliph, and father of Suleiman the Magnificent.

Filming in Tunisia

The production has many international talents. Among them, the Italian designer Luigi Marchiono, who has worked with Ridley Scott. Tunisian film professionals are also working on the production. Moez Ghdiri, Fathi Haddaoui, Yassine Ben Gamra and Najla Ben Abdallah are all in the cast.

Many original Netflix productions are shot in Tunisia and Morocco — for example part of Season 3 of La Casa de Papel in Tunisia, or the mini-series The Spy in Morocco, featuring Sacha Baron Cohen. Present in many African countries, Netflix has not yet produced local productions there, as it does in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
