The Mostra de València will open on October 22nd and end on November 1st. Once again the festival emphasises its commitment to show the best films made around the Mediterranean.
The first films included in the competitive section have been announced:
Zana by Antoneta Kastrati (Kosovo): The director uses elements of fantasy to reflect on the conflict in the Balkans and the horrors of war. Her film has been selected to represent Kosovo at the Oscars.
Mosquito by João Nuno Pinto (Portugal): inspired by real events. Set in 1917, it’s the story of a young man’s journey into the heart of darkness: he enlists in the army in search of glory and finds himself facing hell in Africa’s Portuguese colonies.
La Viajante by Miguel A. Mejías (Spain): this road movie uses landscape as a metaphor for the characters’ solitude and emptiness. It’s about a young woman on an existential journey. Confronted with unexpected situations she films what she sees on her Super-8 camera.
The End will be Spectacular by Ersin Çelik (Syria): a war film about the hundred day siege of the Kurdish town of Diyarbaki by the Turkish army in 2015. Some of the characters in the film are played by survivors.
Paysages d’automne (Autumn Landscapes) by Merzak Allouache (Algeria): the director uses the trademarks of a thriller to show Algeria after the Arab Spring. The central character is a journalist investigating a series of murders of young women linked to a prostitution ring. He comes under pressure from the powerful groups protecting the pimps.
Between Heaven and Earth by Najwa Najjar (Palestine): a portrait of present-day Palestine seen through the eyes of a middle-class, middle-aged couple. They live in Palestine and have been married for five years, but as soon as they cross into Israel they file for divorce. The film won the Best Screenplay Award at the Cairo International Film Festival.
