With its enormous variety of landscapes, Morocco hosts many film productions, both large and small. In April 2015, The Guardian listed the kingdom as one of the best destinations in the world for making films. Indeed the government has created many incentives to encourage film productions and to further improve its offer.

Many directors are seduced by the range of Morocco’s landscapes. On its website, the Centre de la Cinématographie Marocain shows the list of films currently being made, with three feature films in production.

La Daronne, by Jean-Paul Salomé

Bringing together Isabelle Huppert, Hippolyte Girardot, Farida Ouchani, and Liliane Rovère, the film is about a “Franco-Arab legal interpreter, Patience Portefeux, who is also a specialist in wiretapping for the anti-drug squad in Paris. Precarious work, paid under the table. One day, Patience gets sucked into a drug-dealing network and becomes La Daronne, [literally the Mother, the Boss], in the heart of Belleville.” From January 6th to 12th the production moved between Casablanca, Mohammédia, El Jadida, Fès, and Azilal.

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, by Chad Stahelski

Keanu Reeves is back as John Wick. The former hired killer breaks a fundamental rule by killing someone in the New York City Continental, a sanctuary/hotel for criminals. For this he is “excommunicated” and a bounty placed on his head. So during January several Moroccan cities were the back-drop for many chases as the hunt for Keanu Reeves continues.

Lindenberg! by Hermine Huntgeburth

This German production has been filming for a month in Merzouga, Errachidia and Ouarzazate. Jan Bülow, Max von der Groeben, Charly Hübner and Ruby O. Fee are some of the actors in this musical biopic about Udo Lindenberg, a small boy from Westphalia dogged by bad-luck and failure until he unexpectedly became Germany’s most famous rock star.
