TUNISIA / Launch of “ Wataniya éducative”

On April 14th the Tunisian Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Television signed a partnership agreement to create Wataniya éducative a national educational television channel. The following day it was launched.

Every day from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. lessons are broadcast for pupils working towards the national exams. Transmitted by satellite, these lessons are also available on Tunisian Television’s Facebook page and on Youtube.

Wataniya

Wataniya éducative was created because of the lockdown currently in place in Tunisia – for the past month, all primary and secondary schools have been closed. This new channel is a way of responding to the crisis caused by the pandemic, while also enabling a more egalitarian way of teaching. Indeed, the Minister of Education Mohamed El Hamdi explained that “this pandemic has helped us [realise] the importance of online education. But it is also highlighting the shortcomings of our legal system – which does not favour online education – as well as the shortcomings in our IT and technical infrastructure, which don’t offer equal opportunities to every student.”

For the moment, the new educational channel has only been granted a temporary broadcasting license from the Haute Autorité Indépendante de Communication Audiovisuelle, although HAICA member Hichem Snoussi said work is being done to keep the channel alive after the crisis. He added that “we would like it to be permanent, because there is a real need for such a channel in Tunisia. An agreement along these lines will be signed in the future between HAICA and Tunisian Television.”
