Marseille’s Cité de la Musique, in collaboration with the CMCA, is organising three documentary screenings from May 9^th to the 13^th as part of the “Les fils du vent” week.

Entry is free within the limit of available places.

FANFARON, FANFARON (BRASS BAND)

Under the communist regime in Romania, rural bands were an integral part of every urban event – this was the bands’ finest hour. But with the decline of heavy industry, the workers returned to the poverty of their rural villages, This music, played at weddings, baptisms, funerals, is the only thing they have left: it is their pride and joy.

HIPPOLYTE BALIARDO ET LES GITANS DE MONTPELLIER

14 years ago, the Montpellier-based director Katia Martin-Maresco met Hippolyte Baliardo, patriarch of a family of Montpellier Gypsy musicians and unique showman. A deep friendship developed between them, lasting until Hippolytus’ death in 2009. When Katia suggested her idea for a documentary, he agreed without reservation.

CHAKARAKA

Bordeaux: having destroyed a large Roma and Bulgarian squat in 2011, the council then let about thirty families rebuild their cabins just a few metres away from where they’d been before. Height of absurdity or an opportunity to be seized? Gaucho, the documentary’s main character and a much-loved singer within the community, did not ask the question in these terms. For the nth time he simply rebuilt his cabin, with the same enthusiasm. From this squat grew the Chakaraka Orchestra.

Compli’Cité, from May 10^th to 13^th: “CHEMIN DU PHARE” – Exhibition of silver halide photographs presented at the Atelier du Coq (Marseille 1). The director Sylvain Mavel and Lorraine Delgado from the Collectif Roms Chakaraka, continue the work begun by their documentary CHAKARAKA on the Roma and Bulgarian families living precariously.
