SPAIN / Madrid celebrates documentaries at the DocumentaMadrid festival

The 16th DocumentaMadrid is taking place from May 9th to 19th in the Spanish capital. This year the festival dedicated to documentaries takes place in 7 of Madrid’s cultural centres, in addition to its usual venues for screenings. The Cineteca remains the festival’s main venue.

With 123 films on the programme, coming from 36 countries, DocumentaMadrid is a benchmark event for documentaries in Spain and internationally. 77 of the films are having their first screening in Spain

The festival will be showing 53 films in the official selection, divided into five competitive categories: international short and long films, national short and long films, plus “Fugas”, the international competition for experimental films. Competing in this category is Ghassan Halwani’s Lebanese film Erased. Ascent of the Invisible.

In addition to the five competitive categories, the festival offers retrospectives of three filmmakers. The first is about Ruth Beckermann, showing all her films, from the late 1970’s (Arena Squatted; Suddenly, a Strike) right up to today (The Dreamed One, The Waldheim Waltz ). Then a first-ever retrospective of the immense work of French director Sarah Maldoror, who was involved in the 1960’s anti-colonial movements. Finally, DocumentaMadrid will show the work of the Spanish artist Carlos Casas, at the crossroads of documentary and visual and sound arts.
