FRANCE / Foreign sales record for French audiovisual programmes

Foreign sales of French broadcasting programmes achieved a record high in 2017, according to the joint report of the Centre National du Cinéma and TV France International published on September 6th. The total value of foreign sales was €205.2m, an increase of more than €16 million on last year’s figures.

TV France International’s chairman, Hervé Michel, said this is due “to the constantly improving quality of French broadcasting production.” He added that the SVoD digital platforms are opening up new international markets for French drama.

Animated films are leading the export drive, accounting for 37% of French sales. Then comes drama, followed by documentaries, which achieved their best result for 10 years.

Germany buys the most French programmes, with the United States and Belgium close behind. In 2017 French broadcasters increased exports to the United States and Canada by 16%.

However, there are 25% fewer co-productions, and exports have decreased by 3.2% compared with 2016, but that has not impacted sales growth (+ 8.5%).

Finally the chair of the Centre National du Cinéma, Frédérique Bredin, is planning to improve the export of TV series: “there are a lot of co-production agreements in the film business, but not enough in broadcasting.”
