EUROPE / UNIC presents its update on attendance in European cinemas in 2017

Cinema attracts more and more people in Europe, that at least is the conclusion of the International Union of Cinemas’ annual survey. The provisional update was released on February 14th, a more detailed report on the region will be available in the spring.

Some Mediterranean countries show a clear increase in cinema attendance, for example Bosnia Herzegovina has 17.8% more admissions compared to 2016, and Turkey shows a 22.1% increase in admissions.

Cinema attendance is increasing throughout southern Europe, except in Spain (down 0.5% on 2016) and France (down 1.8%). Despite that, 2017 was France’s third best performance of the last fifty years thanks to the success of local productions such as “R.A.I.D Special Unit” and Luc Besson’s “Valérian and the City of a Thousand Planets”, respectively third and fourth at the box office for 2017. The UK had a record-breaking year, with an admissions increase of 1.4%.
