SPAIN FRANCE ITALY / National drama films still well regarded

For the seventh consecutive year, France’s Conseil Supérieur de l’Audiovisuel (CSA) has published a study on “Performances de la fiction en Europe” based on the 2015 viewing figures for drama programmes (films for TV, series, mini-series and serials) in the five major European markets, including Spain, France and Italy.

In Spain, national productions monopolize the top ten drama ratings of the year, unlike the previous year when an American series managed to reach the top 10. “Allí abajo”, a comic series on Antena 3, takes top spot with an average of 5.4 million viewers. Antena 3 and Telecinco share most of the best viewing figures, while the premier public channel TVE1, does not have any of its dramas above 10th position.

According to the CSA, “this revival owes much to the rise of production companies like Bambú Producciones and Boomerang TV”.

In France national productions don’t dominate as they do in Spain, but nevertheless there are some. Six of the ten most popular drama offerings come from the private channel TF1, including “L’Emprise”, a television film which attracted 9.8 million viewers. The other four in the top 10 are American police series. For the first time since 2010 a French drama heads the list, dominated in recent years by the American series “The Mentalist”. However, there are no drama films from public broadcasting.

Lastly for the second consecutive year Italian viewers have preferred the drama offerings from Rai. The top 10 is dominated by the fourth season of the crime series “Un Passo Dal Cielo” (averaging 7.7 million viewers) and is composed entirely of national productions broadcast by the leading public channel, Rai 1.
