EGYPT / Plan for the recovery of the public broadcaster

The Egyptian parliament’s Media, Culture and Antiquities Committee held an extraordinary meeting in February to discuss the financial problems of the ERTU (Egyptian Radio and Television Union).

A “financial and institutional reform” will be developed in collaboration with the National Investment Bank. Among other things, the plan will reform the state-run television channels, trying to make them more appealing to Egyptian viewers, who watch more and more foreign channels. The new strategy is already being used on Channel One, which has changed its programmes. Privatising the channel is also being discussed.
