CROATIA / An experimental Croat film selected for the 2021 Oscars

Croatian film-maker Dalibor Bari’s “Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus” is a surprise nomination for the 2021 Oscars. This Croatian feature is an experimental film, a rarity in the animation category.

The film is about Martin and Sara, fleeing from an oppressive system they have been fighting against. Together they are trying to escape someone called Inspector Ambroz, who is in hot pursuit. “A clandestine love story set against a backdrop of revolution.”

The film-maker was director, artistic creator, script-writer, graphic artist, animator, composer, sound engineer and editor – all from his home and for a total budget of €20,000. Visually the work juggles reality and illusion with rotoscoping, comic book collages and live-action shots.

An unexpected rise to the Oscars

Screened at the 2020 Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the film is one of 26 others in the Animation Category to compete for an Oscar at the 93rd Academy Awards.

The film was released in a dozen art-house cinemas in Croatia and was also shown at Zagreb’s Museum of Contemporary Art. It is not Bari’s first animated film – his short “After Unknown Energies, Unidentified Feelings” opened the 2015 Zagreb Animafest.
